We made it!

Fantastic flight…it wasn’t nearly as torturous as I expected. 13 hours but not bad at all. Mom and I spent a lot of time playing Mahjong on the iPad. We watched one movie and slept for a little while. The flight left and arrived on time, luggage came too 😉 Glad we paid extra for the bulkhead seats, well worth it although it was annoying that so many people thought our extra leg room was also a convenient cross over path for them to get to the other aisle. They’d march right over our bags and in front of our tv screens … i think we should have charged a toll 😉
The airport is HUGE and spotless, no problems with immigration or anything. It’s so big that we had to take a train for what seemed like forever to another terminal just to pick up our luggage.
We were expecting to meet our guide Sara at the airport but her colleague Amy was there instead. she was so sweet. There was a driver to take us to the hotel and she got us all settled in.
The smog was really obvious as soon as we landed – looks like it’s just a foggy day but nope…pollution.
Our hotel, the Poly Plaza, is beautiful and right in the heart of downtown so tomorrow we can easily go off on a stroll. I’ve learned how to say “Hello” and “thank you” and used it several times now….otherwise my translation app has come in handy. We went to a little restaurant (busy “hole in the wall” kind of place for dinner. There was some English on the menu so we were sure to spot the dish that featured Bullfrog. Yup…I didn’t want to look too closely at the rest. It was a little awkward while the waitress stood there after placing the menus in front of us and waited the full 10 minutes that it took for us to figure out what we wanted (that didn’t include Bullfrog). We had a tofu dish that was really spicy and some yummy deep fried sweet potato cake things…and coconut juice. We’ll see how that lands tonight 🙂
It felt great to get some air and walk around a little bit…let it sink in that we’re really here. It was dark already so tomorrow morning will be a whole new Beijing in the daylight. We were very safe. Lots of families out and vendors on the street. Everything seemed to get busy after 8pm. We found a cool little flower market in the courtyard of a small apartment building and a guy selling whole, peeled pineapples off a cart.
Finally going to sleep now at 10pm which is great – hopefully we won’t be too
messed up tomorrow. Whew!

So glad you made it safely. Say hi to your mom for me and enjoy the sights of Beijing in the morning. It’s really easy (and safe) to get around by subway there.
